In the little park on Kasteeldreef in Schoten, where chef Gerd Govaerts still played as a child, the ambitious chef, together with his girlfriend Jeannot Goffin, opened their own restaurant in May 2015. Having previously been sous chef to Julien Burlat at Dôme in Antwerp and after some wanderings in France and the Swiss Alps in various five-star hotels and starred restaurants, the time was ripe for their own project: restaurant Gustatif. Gustatif is located in the renovated ‘Villa Ullens’ in Schoten. With Gustatif – French for tasteful – the chef accentuates his vision of pure cuisine with fresh products and seasonal dishes. The restaurant is known for its French-Belgian cuisine with Asian touches.

Gustativ in Villa Ullens, in the heart of Schoten and in the green
The Villa Ullens, built in 1923 to a design by master builder Jaak Alfons Van der Gucht, was very cleverly and stylishly renovated with a modern extension and large windows. The handsome architecture and design qualities stand out immediately. Underneath the large glass area on the park side, lights provide an atmospheric glow over the plants at night. Inside is a beautiful light parquet floor in dark gray and white tones, providing contrast to the original red brick wall. At the rear is a cozy terrace. Restaurant Gustatif therefore has a warm, homey and intimate character. A mix of old and new, modern and classic, both in the interior and on the menu.
Top restaurant! Very good food, dishes were not only very beautiful but absolute taste sensations. Very nice custom wines, the cheese plate with the custom port was top notch. What’s on the menu at Gustativ?
Gerd Govaerts brings together meticulously crafted produce in plates that stir the palette as well as the eye. In doing so, he pays close attention to relationships between main product, garnish, sauce and decoration. As with lamb with broccoli and cauliflower in various preparations, tartiflette with crumbled vadouvan, cream of vadouvan and carrots, and a sleek, lightly spiced meat gravy. Served separately, lukewarm madeleine of broccoli and Parmesan cheese is a nice idea. Setting is a beautifully renovated villa that will be a century old in 2023. Out back is a lovely garden where tables are spaced widely apart and there is a natural, serene atmosphere.

The neutral fresh taste of Pineo goes perfectly with all exquisite wines and dishes. A natural mineral water that cannot be found everywhere. Right in the center of Schoten, on a green island of silence and tranquility stands the beautiful premises of this restaurant with a very pleasant terrace and garden. The service is absolutely top notch, friendly and with the necessary expert explanations. We enjoyed the 6-course degustation menu accompanied by fine appropriate wines. Each excellent wine was also explained in detail. A pricey but pleasant evening we will often remember. – RaMaIV
